The best orienteering gadgets
Canoe orienteering (or Canoe-O) is a navigation sport where competitors use a topographic map and compass to find control points while paddling a canoe or kayak on lakes, canals, or slow-moving rivers.
Key Elements
Navigation: Paddlers navigate to control points (marked by orange and white flags) located on buoys, piers, or riverbanks.
Punching: Competitors must record their visit at each control point using an electronic chip or manual punch.
Strategy: Route choices require evaluating water currents, wind, and shallows. Sometimes, carrying the boat overland (portage) is allowed to take a shortcut.
Main Race Formats
Line-O (Fixed Sequence): Control points must be visited in a specific, numbered order in the fastest time possible.
Score-O (Free Choice): Competitors have a strict time limit to collect as many points as possible, choosing their own route.
